The exams are over. Now what? Making the most of the end of the school year.
There is something quite lovely about the end of the school year. The exams are finished, the pressure has eased and students can finally take a breath. After months of assessments, deadlines and revision, a little downtime is certainly deserved!
But I also think this is one of the most overlooked opportunities for students to make real progress in English.
When the pressure of upcoming exams is removed, we have the opportunity to go back to basics and work on the skills that sometimes get lost in the rush to prepare for assessments.
CONSOLIDATING PARAGRAPH WRITING

CONSOLIDATING PARAGRAPH WRITING 〰️
For many students, this means consolidating their paragraph writing.
Can they write a clear topic sentence? Can they select an appropriate example? Can they identify a technique and explain its effect? Can they link their ideas back to the question rather than simply retelling what happened in a text?
These are fundamental skills, but they take time and practice to develop.
I often find that students know more than they are able to communicate in their writing. They have interesting ideas and understand the texts they are studying, but translating those ideas into a well-developed analytical paragraph can be challenging.
This is where a little extra practice can make an enormous difference.
Rather than jumping straight into another set of exam questions, use this time to:
Practise writing structured analytical paragraphs.
Develop more sophisticated vocabulary and expression.
Work on explaining techniques rather than simply identifying them.
Improve sentence structure and grammatical accuracy.
Experiment with different ways of expressing an idea.
Read regularly and build a stronger vocabulary.
Importantly, don’t underestimate the value of revisiting skills students have already covered. Sometimes improvement isn’t about learning something completely new; it’s about becoming more confident and consistent with what you already know.

My advice? Enjoy the break, but don’t put the books away completely. Even a little focused practice each week can make the transition into the next school year much easier.
The best time to strengthen your foundations isn’t the night before an exam. It’s when you actually have the time to do it properly.
